PPF Calculator

Estimate your PPF maturity amount with a year-by-year balance.

How to use the PPF calculator

Enter how much you plan to deposit each financial year, the current PPF interest rate and how long you will keep the account. The calculator shows the total you deposit, the interest earned and the maturity value, with a year-by-year balance.

How PPF interest works

The Public Provident Fund is a government-backed savings scheme. Interest is compounded yearly and credited at the end of each financial year. It is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of each month, so a deposit made on or before 5 April earns interest for the whole year. This calculator assumes that you deposit by 5 April every year, which gives the highest possible maturity value.

Key rules

  • You can deposit between ₹500 and ₹1,50,000 in a financial year.
  • The account matures after 15 full financial years.
  • After maturity, you can extend it in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits.
  • Partial withdrawals are allowed from the seventh financial year, and loans are available in earlier years, subject to limits.

The interest rate

The government reviews the PPF rate every quarter. It has stayed at 7.1% for several years, which is why the calculator starts with that value, but you should check the current rate on the India Post or National Savings Institute website and enter it. The calculator assumes the same rate for every year, so treat the result as an estimate.

Tax benefits

PPF is popular because, under the old tax regime, deposits qualify for deduction under Section 80C, and the interest and maturity amount are tax-free. Under the new tax regime, the 80C deduction is not available, but the interest and maturity amount remain tax-free. Tax rules can change, so confirm with a tax professional.
