How to use the CGPA converter

Enter your CGPA on a 10-point scale. The tool shows the percentage given by the most common conversion formulas side by side, so you can pick the one your board or university uses. If your grade card prints a different multiplier, enter it in the custom box. To calculate CGPA from semester results, enter each semester’s SGPA and credits in the second section, adding more semesters as needed.

The formulas compared

CGPA × 9.5 is the method CBSE indicated for its earlier Class 10 CGPA system. CGPA × 10 is used by some institutions as a simple conversion. (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 and (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 are used by some universities that want the percentage to reflect their grading curve more closely. For a CGPA of 8.2, these give 77.9%, 82%, 77% and 74.5%. That spread of several points is why using the right formula matters.

Which formula should I use?

Use the formula printed on your mark sheet or grade card, or the one in your university’s examination rules. If an employer or admission portal specifies its own method, use theirs. When no method is published, ask the examination office for a conversion certificate rather than guessing. Our guide on converting CGPA to percentage covers this in more detail.

Why SGPA to CGPA uses credits

Semesters often carry different numbers of credits. A simple average of SGPAs gives each semester equal weight, which is wrong when one semester has 24 credits and another has 18. The correct CGPA is the sum of (SGPA × credits) for every semester, divided by the total credits. The calculator does this automatically. If you leave credits blank, that semester is skipped.

Using the result

When a form asks for a percentage, keep your grade card ready for verification and, if there is space, mention the formula you used. Using the official method avoids problems during document checks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the CBSE formula for CGPA to percentage?

For its earlier CGPA system, CBSE indicated that an approximate percentage can be found by multiplying CGPA by 9.5.

Can I take a simple average of my SGPAs?

Only if every semester has the same credits. Otherwise use the credit-weighted calculator, which multiplies each SGPA by its credits.

Which formula does my university use?

Check your grade card or the university’s examination rules. Many universities print the formula on the back of the mark sheet.
