Amount in Words (Rupees)

Convert any amount to words in lakh and crore for cheques and invoices.

How to use the amount in words converter

Type an amount in rupees, with or without commas, and up to two decimal places for paise. The tool instantly shows the amount in words using the Indian system of lakh and crore, the amount in Indian number format, its value in lakh or crore, and the same number in the international system of millions and billions. Use Copy words to paste the text into a cheque, invoice or form.

Writing amounts on cheques

On a cheque, the amount in words should match the figure exactly. Write it clearly, start close to the left edge, and end with “Only” so that nothing can be added later. For example, ₹1,25,075.50 is written as “Rupees One Lakh Twenty Five Thousand Seventy Five and Fifty Paise Only”. If the words and figures differ, the bank may return the cheque.

The Indian number system

India groups digits differently from most other countries. After the first three digits from the right, commas come after every two digits: 1,00,000 is one lakh and 1,00,00,000 is one crore. In the international system, the same numbers are written 100,000 (one hundred thousand) and 10,000,000 (ten million). One crore equals ten million, and one lakh equals one hundred thousand.

Quick conversions

10 lakh = 1 million. 1 crore = 10 million. 100 crore = 1 billion. These are handy when reading international news about company valuations or budgets, or when filling forms for foreign clients.

Where this tool helps

Businesses use it for invoices and quotations, which often require the total in words. Students use it to check number-name exercises, and anyone writing a cheque, a rent agreement or an affidavit can use it to avoid spelling mistakes in large numbers.

The converter handles amounts up to 15 digits. Everything runs in your browser.
