How to use the percentage calculator
The calculator has three parts, one for each of the most common percentage questions. Fill in the two boxes in the part you need and press Calculate. Each part works on its own, so you can use them in any order.
The formulas behind each part
What is X% of Y? Multiply Y by X and divide by 100. For example, 18% GST on ₹2,500 is 2,500 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹450.
X is what percent of Y? Divide X by Y and multiply by 100. If you scored 412 out of 500 marks, your percentage is 412 ÷ 500 × 100 = 82.4%.
Percentage change from X to Y Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. If your salary rises from ₹30,000 to ₹33,600, the hike is (33,600 − 30,000) ÷ 30,000 × 100 = 12%. A negative answer means a decrease.
A common mistake
A 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease does not bring you back to the start. ₹100 increased by 50% is ₹150, and 50% off ₹150 is ₹75. Percentage changes always apply to the current value, which is why it helps to calculate each step separately. Our guide on percentages in daily life walks through more examples.
