Word Counter
Count words, characters, sentences and reading time as you type.
How to use the word counter
Type directly into the box or paste text from any document, email or web page. The counts update with every keystroke, so you can watch your total change as you edit. There is no button to press and nothing to install.
What each number means
Words are counted as groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks, which is the same method most word processors use. Characters includes every letter, number, space and punctuation mark, while No spaces leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks. Many forms and social media platforms limit characters rather than words, so it helps to see both.
Sentences are counted by looking for full stops, question marks, exclamation marks and the Hindi purna viram (।). Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by an empty line. Reading time assumes an average adult reading speed of about 200 words per minute, which is a common estimate for on-screen reading.
Who uses a word counter
Students use it to stay within the limits set for essays and assignments. Bloggers and content writers check that an article is long enough to cover a topic properly. Job seekers trim cover letters, and anyone writing a bio, ad copy or meta description uses the character count to fit strict limits. Our guide on how many words different kinds of writing need has practical ranges for each.
Your text stays on your device
The counting happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. The text you enter is not uploaded to our server or stored anywhere, so you can safely check private drafts.
Frequently asked questions
Does the word counter work with Hindi and other languages?
Yes. Words are separated by spaces, so Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi and other languages written with spaces between words are counted correctly. Sentences ending with the Hindi purna viram are also detected.
Are numbers and hyphenated words counted?
A number like 2026 counts as one word, and a hyphenated word like well-known also counts as one word because it has no space inside it.
Is there a limit on how much text I can paste?
There is no fixed limit. Very long documents of hundreds of thousands of words may slow down older phones, but normal essays and articles are counted instantly.
