How to use the password generator

Choose a length and the kinds of characters you want, then press Generate password. A new password appears straight away, and a fresh one is created every time you press the button. Use Copy password to copy it to your clipboard.

How the passwords are made

The tool uses your browser’s built-in cryptographic random number generator (the Web Crypto API), the same kind of randomness used for secure connections. Characters that are easy to confuse, such as the letter l, the number 1, capital O and zero, are left out so the password is easier to type when you need to.

Passwords are created on your device. They are never sent to our server, saved or logged, so nobody else can see the password you generate.

How long should a password be?

Length matters more than anything else. A 16-character password using letters, numbers and symbols has so many possible combinations that guessing it by trying every option is not practical with today’s computers. For important accounts such as email and banking, 16 characters or more is a sensible choice. Read our full guide on creating strong passwords you can remember.

Good habits

Use a different password for every account, so a leak at one website does not put your other accounts at risk. A password manager can store them for you, and turning on two-step verification adds a second layer of protection even if a password is stolen.

Frequently asked questions

Are the generated passwords stored anywhere?

No. They are created by JavaScript in your browser and disappear when you close or refresh the page.

Why are some characters missing?

Look-alike characters such as I, l, 1, O and 0 are excluded to avoid typing mistakes. This reduces the character set only slightly and has very little effect on strength.

Some websites reject symbols. What should I do?

Untick Symbols and increase the length a little, for example to 18 or 20 characters, to keep the password strong.
