How many words should your essay, blog post or caption be?

By the FreeAllTool team · Updated October 28, 2026

“How long should it be?” is one of the first questions people ask when they sit down to write. There is no single right answer, but there are sensible ranges for most common kinds of writing. Use them as a starting point and let the needs of your reader decide the final length.

School and college writing

When a teacher or examiner gives a word limit, treat it as part of the task. Going far over or under can cost marks. Many institutions accept a margin of about 10% either side, but check your own guidelines. A typical school essay might be 300 to 500 words, an undergraduate essay 1,500 to 2,500 words, and a dissertation many thousands. Short answers in exams are often expected to be 50 to 150 words.

Blog posts and articles

A post that answers one quick question can do its job in 600 to 900 words. A complete guide that covers a topic from start to finish often needs 1,500 to 2,500 words. Length on its own does not help a post rank in search engines or keep readers happy; what matters is whether it fully answers the reader’s question without padding. Write until the topic is covered, then cut anything that repeats itself.

Product descriptions

Online shoppers scan rather than read. A product description of 100 to 300 words that explains what the product does, who it is for and its key specifications is usually enough. Use short paragraphs and put the most important details first.

Social media and short formats

Social platforms usually count characters, not words, and limits change over time, so check each platform’s current rules. Search engines generally show about 150 to 160 characters of a page’s meta description and around 60 characters of its title, so keep them within those ranges to avoid being cut off. Our word counter shows characters with and without spaces for exactly this reason.

Emails and cover letters

Busy readers appreciate short emails. Aim for under 150 words for routine messages. A cover letter for a job application is usually 250 to 400 words, enough to show why you are a good fit without repeating your whole CV.

Reading time

Readers often decide whether to start an article based on how long it will take. At an average of about 200 words per minute, a 1,000-word post takes around five minutes to read. Showing reading time can help set expectations.

The real rule

Word counts are guides, not goals. Say what your reader needs to know, clearly and completely, and then stop. A shorter piece that is easy to follow is better than a longer one stretched to reach a number.
