How to calculate your age “as on” a date for exam and job forms

Government job notifications and entrance exams in India often say something like “Candidates must be between 18 and 27 years of age as on 1 August”. Many applicants calculate their age as of today instead of that date, and some find out too late that they were outside the limit. Here is how to get it right.
What “as on” means
The cut-off date is the single day on which your age is measured. It does not matter how old you are on the day you apply or the day of the exam. Only your age on the stated date counts.
How to calculate it
- Find the cut-off date in the official notification.
- Enter your date of birth exactly as it appears on your Class 10 certificate or the document the notification asks for.
- Calculate your age in completed years, months and days on the cut-off date.
Our age calculator lets you set any “age on” date, so you can enter the cut-off date directly instead of today’s date.
Reading the limits correctly
Notifications often state the eligible range as birth dates, for example “born not earlier than 2 August 1998 and not later than 1 August 2007”. If that wording is given, compare your birth date directly with those dates, because it removes any doubt about whether the boundary days are included.
Age relaxation
Many recruitment bodies allow additional years for certain categories, such as reserved categories, persons with disabilities or ex-servicemen. The amount of relaxation differs between organisations and posts, so always check the notification you are applying for rather than relying on general rules.
Common mistakes
- Using today’s date instead of the cut-off date.
- Using a birth date that differs from the one on your certificates.
- Assuming “below 28” and “up to 28” mean the same thing. One may exclude people who have already turned 28.
- Applying relaxation rules from a different exam.
When in doubt, the official notification and the recruiting body’s helpdesk are the final authority.
